1.
Certain physical characteristics are important - Because every costume is the same for a specific character, actors must be a certain height and size to be cast for a particular character. -
2.
No ‘one-finger’ pointing - Watch when you next ask a Disney employee for directions – they’ll point either with two fingers or their whole hand, never with one finger. -
3.
There’s no such thing as “I don’t know.” - You’ll never get this admission from a Disney employee. They have to find a nearby employee that knows or a park phone to ask someone else. -
4.
Short, plain nails are the only option - Women’s nails can’t be more than a quarter inch past the fingertip, and don’t even dream of painting them. -
5.
No funky glasses - There are restrictions on eyewear, with no unconventional colors or visible brands or logos. -
6.
Secret names - You’re not allowed to refer to the employees as employees, they’re all cast members here. -
7.
Signature training is important - Every cast member goes through thorough signature training so that each character’s signature always looks the same. -
8.
Keep it clean - Disneyland is spotless, and the cast members are a big part of that. Everyone has to pick up and trash they see, including the princesses. -
9.
No visible tattoos - This one isn’t a surprise, Disney and full sleeve tattoos don’t really match. -
10.
Everyone goes by first names - Walt Disney insisted on everyone referring to him as ‘Walt,’ way back when this was very unusual. The tradition is carried on today. You’ll hardly ever see a last name at Disneyland. -
11.
No social media - Cast members can’t disclose anything about their jobs on social media. If they did, they could be fired immediately. -
12.
Let your hair down, or put it up, whatever they say - Because there are strict guidelines about how the characters look, there are restrictions on hair color, style and facial hair. -
13.
They’ve got code words - Nothing unsavoury can come out a cast members mouth, so they use code words. A vomiting incident used to be called a ‘protein spill,’ but now it’s just a “code V.” -
14.
It’s a seriously small world - Cast members need to stay in character at all times. When they’re asked about non-Disney things, like currents events or other movies, they’ve got to play dumb, and act like they have no idea what you’re talking about!
